International Day Against Smoking
On the occasion of the International Anti-smoking Day on 31 May, the launch of the “Institute for Research and Innovation on Tobacco Control” was presented.
The announcement emphasizes that Greece is the European country with the highest incidence of smokers in Europe. 38% of the Greek population (over 15 years old) smokes, compared with 43% in 2009, according to Eurobarometer 2017. Worldwide, smoking causes more than 7 million fellow humans every year, although it is the most important source of morbidity and mortality that can be prevented.
The Institute, which aims to take action to prevent and stop smoking, made its first exposure to the 6th Health Forum on Saturday 2 June. With a stylish booklet, young volunteer scientists from the Institute informed the participants of the events about the goals of the new anti-smoking initiative. The Institute’s website is already in operation.
